VEERUM steps up for accessible housing

Updated: Mar 25, 2022

We know it is a challenge to keep fit safely during the pandemic. Many Canadians have added walking into their daily routines while working remote. Not only has walking shown to help people lose weight, improve their heart health, and increase endurance; getting outside for at least 30 minutes a day improves overall mental well-being. This February, the VEERUM team will get moving and boost our mental health for a great cause.

What is the VEERUM virtual step challenge?

Many of our team members had prioritized walking as a form of fitness building and mental wellness for their New Year’s resolutions, we thought that undertaking the step challenge as a team would be an excellent way to keep them on track. This challenge will be a positive journey to team build and bring us together, despite the distance between our home offices.

At VEERUM, the challenge is part of our commitment to supporting employees through a difficult year, but we wanted others to benefit from this challenge as much as we will. That’s why VEERUM is partnering with the Accessible Housing Society to support the Calgary community in these difficult times. For every $1 that this virtual step challenge raises for Accessible Housing Society, VEERUM has pledged to match, dollar for dollar up to $2,500.

What is the Accessible Housing Society?

Accessible Housing Society is a Calgary non-profit organization that provides safe, affordable, barrier-free housing for people struggling with chronic homelessness, limited mobility, and disability. They match people’s unique needs with an affordable and accessible home; offering help with almost any support they might need so they can overcome the challenges that led them to homelessness in the first place.

The programs and supports of Accessible Housing have such a positive impact in the lives of clients and residents. Many individuals have finally come to know the joy and security of a home and can thrive in community because of the support from Accessible Housing.

With the cancellation of in-person events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many charitable organizations like Accessible Housing Society have been greatly impacted by the lack of funding opportunities. It is essential that the nonprofit sector receives support from the public to make sure they can still provide help to those who rely on their services.

A fundraising page has been created to share the story of Accessible Housing and make it easy for people to donate to our fundraising goal.

The VEERUM virtual step challenge: The facts

We created a community on a virtual fitness platform that has a leaderboard, counts team and individual steps and provides an avenue for support and encouragement. Those participating can share photos from their daily walks and share their favourite routes around the city.

How can I stay updated on the challenge?

You can keep with the challenge on our website, and we will be sharing updates via our social media pages.
